I am at a workshop this weekend on "Addiction - Explored as an Archetypal Journey toward Personal Empowerment", Caroline Myss, Hockley Valley Resort, Orangeville, Ontario, Canada. I decided to share my journey as kind of a journal process for me...in order to keep my notes straight and discover how much of this information has truly resonated with me! So here we go...I will take it slow as I want to digest this information as best I can. This is truly a personal journey for me but one that I feel will help all of us see what is holding us in an addictive behavior that we may be willing to change.
So ..... An addict is not helpless over their addiction. We are not powerless against other obstacles in our lives...how so this one obstacle? We need to find that empowerment within us....empowerment. We are never done understanding ourselves and the fragments of ourselves we have flying around in us. We are never truly totally congruent...just when we get at peace with one thing, another part of us will spiral out away from the 'mother ship'! The many parts of us are like ships out sailing around the 'mother ship' (our authentic self)....as these ships stay within the radar of the mother ship....one ship may spin out of orbit ...fall into a behavior that is not congruent with our authentic self.
This is when we need to initiate change....How fast change happens is what constitutes the path of your life. Sometimes we lie to ourselves...assuring ourselves that everything is in order...that our ships are all within the radar of the mother ship...but we know they are not.
As we take this journey we will begin to understand our own will....that there is no end to any choice you make. EVERY CHOICE MATTERS...wow I better say that one again....EVERY CHOICE MATTERS! We become paralyzed at making a choice because of the possible consequence!
We prefer to see our lives as an allusion....so that is why we stay addicted.
We define ourselves as rational....however, 65% of our choices are irrational. We know that we are making a choice that serves our addiction...but we do it anyway. We have this allusion that it is 'ok' and that it is the 'right' choice....at least that is what the voice of that addiction tells us...right?
We don't want to look at the part of us that has an 'addiction'....and it is not about the substance or action at all...it is totally about the emotion that this substance or action is feeding. Are you addicted to power, love, control, affection, attention, pain, pity, comfort, love. That is where are true addictions lie...in the emotion we 'crave'. We absolutely do not want to become acquainted with this part of ourselves.
